Day 12


We spent the morning settling in because we were just too tired last night to get organized. Storage is VERY limited and our suitcases really don't have a place to be. We will keep the big one on our bed during the day and on the top rear step at night. The smaller ones can tuck in one spot in the dining area and one spot just before the "hallway" that is easy enough to get around.

This morning our fridge light is flashing so we turned it off for 15 minutes and then back on, it is working again. One must run the motor 5 hours a day so we have turned on the motor for now as the spark on the stove did not work either (we could light it manually). It is raining off and on. We are in no hurry today. We planned to rest today only walking to a nearby pub for lunch. We have decided we will do that and take a late lunch and spend the night here again. There was a bit of a learning curve with the shower but it was fantastic with plenty of hot water. Once the rain let up we walked to the Greywell to the pub The Fox and the Goose. To our disappointment, food is not being served. They stopped at 2p and will not begin again until 6p, so we are too late to eat. No choice but to order a drink because we want to use the Wi-Fi. As it was we felt very welcomed and we sat on and spent the 3 hours until dinner enjoying some relaxation and friendly time. For dinner we ordered the seafood platter appetizer to share and we each ordered fish and chips for dinner. I'm all caught up on my blog and even posted some photos to FB. I had time to check emails as well. Thankfully, nothing important.
Good Morning Rain
The rain has stopped and we are finished eating so it is time to head back to the boat. It seems odd that we have sat here at the Fox and Goose for so long but it was certainly worth the wait, what fabulous food. I noticed they are taking reservations right and left, it is a popular place. However, it is pretty worn at the edges and this gives it a very unique and warm feeling.

We made it back in about 20 minutes and still no rain so we decided to tour Odiham Castle now, just in case it is raining in the morning. How interesting, a little place with a lot of history! The claim is King John rode from here, met other Barons, and affixed his seal to the Magna Carta. Many different people have lived in this castle over the centuries. I am glad they managed to preserve some of it.

So now our day is done and we are relaxing, watching an NCIS DVD and reading. Good night!

    If you have time to see the Magna Carta when you get back to London, it's worth a stop!

Day 18

Up and ready to go after a quick breakfast for John and coffee for both of us. As we approached the entrance there was Arthur, with is smiling face, to guide us in. That was a good thing as backing up is not something we have mastered. Actually, Arthur says there is very little control when going in reverse. What one does is put the nose into the bank then use the rudder in forward to move the back. We did perfect with his instructions! We say good-bye to the twisted trees that reach for the sky and their twisted roots that hang on for dear life as the water slowly works away at them. The canal teems with life from the smallest bug skimming across the water, the abundance of berries, the birds that serenade us every day, and the unseen rustling along the bank as we pass. Arthur called us a taxi and bid us farewell, we were on our way to Hook Train Station for the next adventure and he continues on in his seemingly idyllic existence there along the canal.   I wan...

We've Got a Ticket to Ride!

We got our train tickets for all the trips we need to our various destinations. I am relieved they came because it was no picnic getting these purchased! Our friend George suggested go directly to GWR, which worked  great, until it didn't.  It took some time to figure out exactly where we wanted to go, meaning the correct station names, then times, choosing a seat, etc. Finally, I was all set then the site refused my credit card. I tried several times to no avail. I called Capitol One to find out what the problem was and they said the first attempt was accepted and I should check with GWR why it said it wasn't. Next I called GWR and after talking to 2 people they finally realized I was in the US and said no out-of-country cards were accepted. Oh great! I said it took the charge and they said to call my credit card company for that.
