We've Got a Ticket to Ride!

Image
We got our train tickets for all the trips we need to our various destinations. I am relieved they came because it was no picnic getting these purchased! Our friend George suggested go directly to GWR, which worked  great, until it didn't.  It took some time to figure out exactly where we wanted to go, meaning the correct station names, then times, choosing a seat, etc. Finally, I was all set then the site refused my credit card. I tried several times to no avail. I called Capitol One to find out what the problem was and they said the first attempt was accepted and I should check with GWR why it said it wasn't. Next I called GWR and after talking to 2 people they finally realized I was in the US and said no out-of-country cards were accepted. Oh great! I said it took the charge and they said to call my credit card company for that. So, of course I called Capitol One back and they said either the charge will fall off the "pending" status or be charged. I should wa...

Where's John's Captain Hat?

We booked this canal boat today, the Teasel . I am disappointed it doesn't have Wi-Fi but it is still the best option for us with the location and timing.  £1125.00 is US$1470.60 - Let the adventures begin!!! Look at the itinerary of the various things we ill see and do:   Route Highlights: Natural England consider the Basingstoke Canal which runs through the counties of Surrey and Hampshire to be one of the finest waterways in Britain. To appreciate it, all you need is to take it slow and easy, meandering slowly through an environment abundant with both plant and wildlife. Admire the trees, riverside plants and rural landscape; look for heron, coots, moorhens and ducks; capture the brilliance of the shy, diving kingfisher, the elusive water vole, badgers and bats at dusk. Seek out the remains of 'King John's' castle and peer into the depths of the Greywell Tunnel, now closed to navigation and well known for its colony of bats. There is also a good choice of...

Maybe???

Maybe this is going to happen! Almost 4 years ago I began this blog and I have to say it was probably 10 years before that when John saw this option and wanted to do it. Maybe it will happen this July.  We are planning a trip to London, Cornwall for the wedding of our friends, then this canal boat trip, and some touring time with our friends after their brief honeymoon, if that  works out. We are pretty excited about the whole thing! We are looking at this boat out of Odiham. There are several routes to choose from

Here Comes the Bride!

It is Soooo Exciting. Our friends are getting married and we are invited! We are so happy for them and happy for us that we hope to attend this fabulous event at Polhawn Fort, Rame Head, Torpoint, Cornwall, UK! After deciding we would go they also informed us we will be staying at the Polhawn Fort with them for the magical 3-day weekend!

Detailed Plan of a Typical Narrow Boat

Certainly “cozy” but let’s face it, we love our little Casita. Besides there are outside spaces and one can take extra days to do their chosen trip as well.  For instance, you could take what would normally be a one week trip and stretch it into two weeks to further enjoy towns, Pubs, and the countryside along the way! The possibilities are endless!

UK Canal Boats

Image
Our friends in the UK, G&T (George & Tawny), sent me a great site for UK canal boats called Drifters . Oh boy it looks like so much fun. One might think France would be the most sought after place for canal boat cruising, and maybe it is. For sure it would be fantastic! BUT we have not seen much of the UK and we would most likely connect this with at least a few days in London to see some significant sites as well. As far as the canals, the options seem endless!  Just a quick glance makes me think about the Leeds and Liverpool canal, wouldn’t that be great? Time for John to don his Captain’s hat!!!
